  13. HBO sees the light in Liberace biopic 'Behind the Candelabra'

NEW YORK — When the news broke in 1987 that Liberace, the famously flamboyant pianist, was dead at age 67 with what his manager had claimed was anemia brought on by a watermelon diet but was, in fact, AIDS, it made front-page headlines around the country. It was a fitting tribute for a world-famous entertainer who just a few months earlier had played three weeks of sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall.

  15. Cannes honcho Thierry Fremaux is Hollywood's inside man

When Baz Luhrmann’s "The Great Gatsby" raises the curtain on the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, it will serve, among other things, as an indication that the love affair between the festival and Hollywood is alive and well — much more than the last time Luhrmann opened Cannes, 12 years ago, with "Moulin Rouge." Back then, relations between Cannes and Tinseltown had hit something of a low, with few studio films of the late ’90s making the trek to the Croisette ("Beyond Rangoon," anyone?). When he joined Cannes in 2001, festival director Thierry Fremaux was immediately tasked by fest president Gilles Jacob with a peacemaking mission to the West Coast, and the decade since has been one of the richest for le cinema Americain on the Riviera — even if the biggest Cannes-launched Oscar winner of recent years was a French production: "The Artist."

  19. 'The Spectacular Now' director James Ponsoldt to adapt 'Pippin'

Making two indie films about the drinking problems of young people might not immediately seem to put one in line for adapting a beloved Broadway musical, but such are the unpredictable ways of Hollywood. The Weinstein Co. said Tuesday that James Ponsoldt, director of the recent "Smashed" and "The Spectacular Now," would be writing a screen adaptation of the musical "Pippin."

  21. Stars pick the directors they want to watch

Let's say there's a row of beautiful movie theaters, and the marquee of each one reads, &quot;New film by (name of filmmaker here)." And let's say there's no other information about the film itself. Which one would you choose? We offered this dilemma to some notable performers and filmmakers, asking the question: <strong>"If you could see a new movie by any living filmmaker &mdash; and not know anything about the movie beforehand &mdash; whose would you choose?"</strong> Here's how they responded.
