1. And The Oscar Goes To...Argo For Best Picture

<span style="font-size: 12pt;">The 85th Annual Academy Awards were handed out last night and it looks like Ben Affleck’s Best Director snub didn’t ruin his film’s chances, because Argo continued its award show dominance, nabbing the night’s big honor Best Picture (which was announced by First Lady Michelle Obama). Overall Argo took home three awards, also winning Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing. As for the acting categories, there really weren’t too many surprises, with all of the frontrunners walking away winners. As expected, Best Actor went to Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln (the first actor to win three Oscars in the Lead Actor category), with Jennifer Lawrence taking home Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook (and falling up the stairs as she went to accept); Anne Hathaway winning Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables and Christoph Waltz winning Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained. Other winners included: Ang Lee, Best Director for Life of Pi; Brave, Best Animated Feature; Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Best Original Screenplay and Adele’s “Skyfall,” Best Original Song.

  7. LINCOLN TOPS OSCAR NOMINEES

<span style="color: black;">Steven Spielberg’s epic Lincoln leads the list of nominees for the 85th Annual Academy Awards, nabbing 12 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director (Spielberg), Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), Best Supporting Actress (Sally Field) and Best Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones). Coming in close behind is Life of Pi, with 11 nominations. Competing against both films for Best Picture are Silver Linings Playbook, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained. Amour and Les Misérables. The biggest snubs of the day came in the Best Director category. Although they were considered locks, both Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow failed to get recognized, despite both of their films, Argo and Zero Dark Thirty, nabbing Best Picture nominations. (Les Misérables director Tom Hooper was also snubbed in the category, although he wasn’t considered as much of a shoe-in.) Other interesting Oscar tidbits: all five nominees in the Best Supporting Actor category (Jones, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christoph Waltz, Alan Arkin and Robert DeNiro) are past Oscar winners. Amour’s Emmanuelle Riva, who is 85, is the oldest Best Actress nominee ever, while Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Quvenzhané [Qua-VEN-zha-ne] Wallis is the youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee ever at 9 (she was six when she shot the film). Leonardo DiCaprio, who received a Golden Globe nod for Django Unchained, failed to get a nomination. This year’s Oscar host, Seth MacFarlane received a nod for Best Original Song for his Ted tune “Everybody Needs A Best Friend.” And Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises didn’t get any nominations, not even in technical categories.Click here for a complete list of nominees.
