1. Onion 'edgy': Tasteless and sickening

The tweet went as follows:
The tweet went as follows: "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhane Wallis is kind of a (expletive), right?" The missing word is a bit of verbal sewage sometimes used to disparage women. Begins with "c," rhymes with "hunt." Its...

3. Oscars speeches: Honestly sincere, or expertly faked?

Los Angeles looks lush.
Los Angeles looks lush. But as often noted, it is actually an arid wasteland where nothing but artifice and self-interest sprouts naturally. That's the cynical, archetypal reading. For instance, two thirds of the way into Nathanael West's cynical,...

5. Manipulative music, plot devices keep 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' from greatness ★★

Already "Beasts of the Southern Wild"is the most divisive film of 2012, which is a testament to its co-writer and director, Benh Zeitlin, making his feature film debut with a picture that killed at Sundance, won the Camera d'Or (best first film) at Cannes and has been critically anointed by some while declared shiny but overbearing by others.

7. Viola Davis plots a career, not just for herself

Viola Davis has won two Tony Awards for her Juilliard-trained stage work in the August Wilson plays "King Hedley II" and "Fences." She has been Oscar-nominated twice, first for a supporting role in "Doubt," more recently for a much larger role, in "The Help." Playing the African-American domestic, Aibileen, in that hit brought her much acclaim and no little amount of grief, Davis told me the other day by phone. She's coming to Chicago Monday to pick up a career achievement award from the Chicago International Film Festival.

9. Anticipating the Oscars: These might contend

My Academy Awards predictions — and honestly, why not start now, a month before the nominations are announced? — carry an odor akin to Paul Rudd's cologne in "Anchorman": 60 percent of the time, they're right every time.

11. 'Silver Linings Playbook' snags Spirit awards

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The persistent irony of the Film Independent Spirit Awards is that as much as they're positioned as the DIY antidote to the Academy Awards, the indie film with the most Oscars recognition almost invariably reaps the greatest rewards.

13. What to expect from Seth MacFarlane's debut outing as Oscar host

A year after Billy Crystal helmed the Oscars for approximately the 40 millionth time, hosting duties fall to “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, who’s directed a grand total of one movie and had a minor role alongside Dwayne Johnson (and Crystal) in “Tooth Fairy.”

17. Life Out Here: That's just not funny?

As native Spanish speakers, some of my students have problems saying “third” because the “th” sounds isn’t used in Spanish (unless you’re from Barthelona, Valenthia or elthewhere in Thpain). Some of my students use a “t” sound instead.
