1. Bad taste, and on such a large scale

It should be good news that a giant statue of a woman rose over one of Chicago's most conspicuous public spaces this week. Chicago, a city that has almost as many statues as it has potholes, is notoriously short on statues of women. Mile after...

3. Oscar nominations a blast from the past

John Osborne wrote the key post-World War II British drama "Look Back in Anger," later filmed in 1959. By contrast there’s very little anger in all the look-backs among this year’s Academy Award nominations. Oscar's unofficial slogan in early 2012 is more like "Look Back with Bittersweet Nostalgia at the Industry’s Salad Days."

7. Will drama, music, romance draw viewers to 'Smash' on NBC?

Without the freaks and geeks of "Glee,"who made long-skeptical network executives suddenly receptive to prime-time characters singing and dancing, there would be no "Smash."But NBC's eminently watchable and shrewdly crafted new drama series, which premieres Feb. 6 after a heavy marketing campaign, is not about high school drama but the actual grown-up business of Broadway itself, otherwise known as freaks and geeks with bigger budgets and training, but the same insecurities.

"Smash," the mid-season NBC replacement TV show all about the process of creating a new Broadway musical, had what the producers said was the first screening of its pilot episode before "real people" on Monday night in Chicago. Brian D'Arcy James, one of the show's stars, was at the screening, held at a South Loop movie theater.

11. Signs all point to enjoyment on a road trip through rural Florida

I missed the sign when I first passed it on the stretch of County Road 42 that bridges Lake and Marion counties.
I missed the sign when I first passed it on the stretch of County Road 42 that bridges Lake and Marion counties. That's uncharacteristic, because the sign said "BBQ" and that combination of letters is pretty much always enough to stop me, even in the...

13. Indiana State Museum to display Jim Irsay collection

From the presidential, to pop culture, to counter culture, the Irsay Collection is massive in its size, value and scope. Like any array of collectables, the collection says as much about the history, as it does about the collector, who come February, will share a small part of it at the Indiana State Museum.

19. Patt Morrison Asks: Spirit guide Kenny Kingston

Everybody knows that newlyweds William and Kate are in town this weekend. But Kenny Kingston says he knows how that royal marriage will work out. The self-styled Psychic to the Stars who has hosted lucrative infomercials, TV shows and hotlines says he consulted with the likes of Lucille Ball and John Wayne on this side of life, heard from Elvis and James Dean on the other side, and knows Marilyn Monroe from both sides -- she gave him the table and chairs where we sat and talked in his Studio City home. He learned his craft from his grandmother, his mother and his mother's friend, psychic devotee Mae West. And Los Angeles' wide embrace of every branch of spiritual endeavor made Kingston his own kind of celebrity. With collaborator Valerie Porter, he's still writing books and is about to launch an Internet radio show into a world, seen and unseen, that has changed substantially since he first offered it his psychic insights. I'll quote the usual fine print: It's for entertainment purposes.

21. Gloria Steinem: The founder

You know what they say about March -- comes in like a lion, goes out like a lamb. Forget that. March is Women's History Month. It should come in like a lioness, and go out like one too. Like, say, Gloria Steinem. As a seminal figure in the American...
