1. Fourth time's not the charm for French anti-war novel 'War of the Buttons' ★★

The fourth screen adaptation of Louis Pergaud's 1912 novel (and one of two dueling versions to hit French theaters within a week of each other), this "War of the Buttons" melds the book's anti-militarist story of feuding rural schoolboys to a boilerplate take on the French Resistance.

  3. Film review: Richard Gere plays one of the 1% in 'Arbitrage'

“Arbitrage” is not about Jack Abramoff, or Bernie Madoff or even Mitt Romney. But resemblances between any one of them and the film's protagonist, Robert Miller (Richard Gere), are hardly coincidental. Miller is a stand-in for a whole class of people — the 1% of the 1% of the 1% — to wit, Wall Street. He is what Tom Wolfe labeled a “Master of the Universe” in his novel “The Bonfire of the Vanities” — with which “Arbitrage” shares a number of plot elements.

  11. Movie review: 'Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life'

Unconventional, imaginative, nothing if not audacious, "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" is a portrait of creativity from the inside, a serious yet playful attempt to find an artistic way to tell an emotional truth.
