  3. The Writing Life: Sandi Tan switches genres for 'The Black Isle'

Sandi Tan's past is teeming with ghosts. The Pasadena-based filmmaker-turned-novelist isn't a "seer" herself — she's a self-described scaredy-cat and doesn't particularly enjoy supernatural books and movies — but her childhood in Singapore in the 1980s was populated with vivid ghost stories and family members who saw spirits. Even her elementary school, a dank former World War II-era military hospital, was said to be haunted.

  5. Film review: Nancy Savoca returns to form with 'Union Square'

Throughout the ‘90s, Nancy Savoca was one of those indie filmmakers whose work consistently garnered festival awards and positive reviews without crossing over to a broader audience. After three edgy features — “True Love” (1989), “Dogfight” (1991) and “Household Saints” (1993) — whose virtues did not lend themselves to high-concept marketing, she started moving into television. In 1999, she made the Rosie Perez film “The 24 Hour Woman” with a higher budget — still in the low seven digits — and glossier production values. Despite several fine performances, it did little business. Now she's back with “Union Square,” in all ways a welcome return to the grit and edginess of her early work.

  7. Elle Fanning roots Sally Potter's new movie, 'Ginger and Rosa'

TELLURIDE, Colo. -- The new film “Ginger and Rosa” by English filmmaker Sally Potter screened Friday night at the Telluride Film Festival high in the mountains of Colorado. A tale drawn in no small part from Potter’s own life, the movie follows two young girls through a coming-of-age story set against the early '60s backdrop of nuclear disarmament protests and the Cuban missile crisis. With stirring performances by relative veteran Elle Fanning and newcomer Alice Englert, the film is on the fall festival circuit in search of U.S. distribution.
