  1. 'Lost' art tells of a love lost

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
He was a celebrated painter and political agitator who put revolution before art. She was a twentysomething poet, dazzled by her charismatic suitor, David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of the leading Mexican muralists who audaciously combined public art and...

  3. She's on a mission to make Latin films

For nearly a decade, actress Salma Hayek and her production partner, José Tamez, have been trying to launch a mini-studio that caters to the Latino audience. They're finally getting some traction, thanks in part to the success of "Ugly Betty," the popular television show they produce for ABC that is based on a Colombian soap opera, "Yo Soy Betty, la Fea," and "Frida," the 2002 biography of artist Frida Kahlo in which Hayek also starred.

  5. 'Jane' Turns Author into Character

Biopics about artists often fall into the bad habit of explaining away the creative process. There's a certain "oh, I get it" satisfaction in the suggestion that William Shakespeare wrote "Romeo And Juliet" because he was himself a star-crossed lover (see...

  7. Museum deaccessioning done right

José Clemente Orozco was one of 20th century Mexico's great socially minded muralists. A stark 1929 easel painting made at the dawn of the Great Depression helps to show how. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art bought the modestly sized tempera and oil painting last year -- its first painting by the artist -- and today it hangs on the fourth floor of the Art of the Americas building.

  11. Mural memorializes Ventura's Tortilla Flats

It took just one month for a new <a href=&quot;http://www.mbuniverse.com/tortilla.shtml">freeway mural</a> in Ventura to be hit by graffiti. The tagger was considerate, however, taking pains not to mar the piece, which commemorates a neighborhood destroyed in the 1950s to make way for the 101 Freeway. Instead of writing directly on the artwork, the tagger left a message on the back of an adhesive bandage, which was then applied as carefully as a mother treating a scrape on a child.

  23. Splashing off the canvas

After 17 years of Beverly Hills apartment life, Miriam Wosk wanted a house. It's not that she didn't like where she lived &#8212; what's not to like about a Frank Gehry-designed penthouse in Roxbury Park &#8212; but &quot;time passed, life changed," says Wosk, a mixed-media artist. She'd gotten married, had a child, gotten divorced; she was ready to make more revisions. Ocean. Sea air. Grass.
