  1. Herman Maril: Baltimore artist painted what he saw

Herman Maril had two worlds, and each provided him what something the other lacked.
Herman Maril had two worlds, and each provided him what something the other lacked. The artist, who was born in Baltimore in 1908 and died here in 1986, spent his life painting some of the grittier aspects of the city. Invariably, his astute and...

  5. Jonathan Demme makes time for 'Family Week'

If the dysfunctional, self-medicating characters that populate so much 20th-century drama were to check into rehab or get therapy, would they still be stage-worthy? Eugene O'Neill didn't write "Long Day's Journey Into Recovery" or Tennessee Williams "A Streetcar Named Wellness."

  11. Jeffrey Richards: big man on Broadway

On the opening night of the revival of Eugene O'Neill's "Desire Under the Elms," Kevin Spacey, Naomi Watts and a crush of theatergoers pressed into the St. James Theatre. But the man most instrumental in its transfer from Chicago's Goodman Theatre was nowhere to be seen. Finally, as the lights blinked final warning, lead producer Jeffrey Richards appeared, glad-handing the crowd of theater professionals. The snappy attire, including chic aviator sunglasses, seemed Richards' only concession to his new position as one of Broadway's most powerful producers.

  13. 'August' more intense as it opens on Broadway

    Tribune theater critic
Maybe the prolonged and confounding stagehands strike had Deanna Dunagan and Amy Morton all corked up and ready to burst. Maybe they're mindful that Broadway's cavernous Imperial Theatre housed "Les Miserables" for 13 years and is best suited to the...

  15. True stories and other modern-day fantasies

WE live in a time when reality has evidently trumped fiction. The novel loses readers, as narrative nonfiction and memoirs gain in popularity. Reality television, once derided as a fad, is apparently here to stay. Young people abandon the so-called old media to post anecdotes from their lives and videos of their activities online. In theater, docudramas, in which quotes from real people are dramatized, have become more present on our stages. Today, truth is not only stranger than fiction, it also seems to be more popular.

  19. Jacques Brel alive is again in Rogers Park

    Tribune critic
Mention Jacques Brel and you summon up images of cabaret stools, turtlenecks, berets and pretentious chanteuses with bad French accents trying to get their lips around "Ne Me Quitte Pas." For that, we have to blame the ubiquitous "Jacques Brel is Alive...

  21. Highs, if not heights at the Tony Awards

FIRST THE good news: Compared to our debt-roiled, war-mired nation, Broadway had a lot to celebrate this year. In addition to luminously acted new dramas and shimmeringly staged revivals, there was something approximating a genuine horse race for best musical -- a godsend for everyone who religiously sits through the normally suspense-bereft Tony telecast.

  23. Marcia & Lorenzo are real cool geezers

WHEN was the last time you heard anyone get excited about a new film critic? That was my reaction when "Michael Clayton" director Tony Gilroy began raving to me about the review he'd seen on YouTube. "It was terrific," he said. "I sent it to George [Clooney] right away." On Ain't It Cool News, Wes Anderson made a point of singling out a review of his film "Darjeeling Limited" from the same YouTube site.
