  1. From culture to culture and from reel to reel

Mexican cinema has been flourishing for the last decade thanks to the international success of such innovative directors as Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu and actors Salma Hayek and Gael García Bernal. Hollywood has also taken notice, with major studios luring the talent. But the cinematic cross-pollination is nothing new. In the silent era, Hollywood invited Mexican movie stars Dolores Del Rio, Lupe Velez, Ramon Navarro and Lupita Tovar to the major studios. And though Cantinflas didn't achieve the success that he did in Mexico, the comedian stole the 1956 Oscar-winning best picture, "Around the World in 80 Days," from under the dapper nose of David Niven.

What becomes a legend most? How do you retool an icon without alienating a fan base that has been loyal for longer than the core movie audience has been alive? What, in other words, do you do with James Bond?

If Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato ever "go Hollywood," they'd have to leave town.

  11. Sail away on Queen Mary, the original

Some "getaways" are wholly dependent on the strength of your imagination. With the new Queen Mary 2's transatlantic crossings out of our reach, we did the next best thing: booked a night aboard the original Queen Mary and pretended.

  13. 'Around the World in 80 Days'

"Around the World in 80 Days" sails along on a slipstream of pleasant scenery, amusing incident and the boundless charms of its appealing leading men, Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan: It's an unexpectedly buoyant spectacular. Based on the Jules Verne novel, the basis of a 2-ton turkey from 1956 with David Niven, this light entertainment suggests that the class of movie known as "the family film" — think Fred MacMurray and a talking dog — has yet to be vanquished by product placements, vulgarity and unnecessary violence. It may never be hip to be square, but as this genial film attests sometimes it's sweet relief.

Friday June 6, 1997      "Con Air" is a big, loud, noisy movie made with almost scientific precision for people who like big, loud, noisy movies. Numbing but not boring, it's finally more dispiriting than exhilarating, like a wild night of debauchery...
