7. New York Fashion Week fall 2013: Kimberly Ovitz

NEW YORK -- Kimberly Ovitz, the daughter of Hollywood power player Michael Ovitz, showed her fall-winter 2013 collection Thursday afternoon at New York Fashion Week. The setting was the now-vacant Cafe Rouge, site of historic performances by such jazz legends as Count Basie and Duke Ellington, which the designer chose because of its history and rustic feel. Ovitz moved her business from Los Angeles to New York about a year and a half ago.

  11. Soul Street Dance Company Brings Breakdancing and Hip-Hop Moves to Artists Collective in Hartford

The four male street dancers of the Soul Street Dance Company (pictured), from Houston, Texas, play up their poppin' and lockin' skills to the music of, um, Count Basie, Elvis Presley, the Tempatations, Aerosmith and Michael Jackson? The show's about energy, style and discussion, as the fellas demonstrate various moves and their origins, from Brazilian Capoeira to NYC breakdancing and contemporary hip-hop moves. The troupe of formerly at-risk young men dates back to 1996, when they were an amateur Houston street crew mixing it up on the streets. There's also a master dance workshop on Feb. 8 (call (860) 527-3205 for info about that).

  17. B.B. King's thrill isn't gone

B.B. King's tour bus -- or, more accurately, his luxury pad on wheels -- has a stereo rig that's bigger than your iPod collection. The Mississippi Delta boss and legendary blues guitarist stows the monstrosity, a touch-screen Kaleidoscope sound-system, inside his room. He's able to call up thousands of albums and DVDs from Clapton or Bono or Count Basie, or anybody, at will. (His ex-wives took the LP collection, he likes to say only half-jokingly.)

  21. Dead On Live Re-Creates Note-For-Note Versions of Classic Grateful Dead Albums

There are countless Grateful Dead tribute acts — great ones, the Dark Star Orchestra, for example — who get it right: Jerry Garcia's treble-heavy tone and mixolydian meanderings, Phil Lesh's restless, rootless bass, dual drummers driving the train through Drums >> Space, and back. They know the arrangements, and they know how to turn on the audience.
