3. 'The Campaign': No winners in this race ★ 1/2

Talk about your undecided voters. The new Will Ferrell/Zach Galifianakis vehicle "The Campaign" can't make up its mind about dumb vs. smart; crass vs. crass with a conscience; or cheap caricature vs. satire stoked by a sincere call to action.

  5. Movie review: 'The Campaign'

Talk about your undecided voters. The new Will Ferrell/Zach Galifianakis vehicle "The Campaign" can't make up its mind about dumb versus smart, crass versus crass with a conscience, or cheap caricature versus satire stoked by a sincere call to action. Comedies with something to say often go about saying it a dozen different ways, but this intended skewering of lowball politics and America's corrosive cynicism regarding our elected officials, and how they got that way, struggles to film a cheap sight gag to decent effect.

  9. Funny or Die's Adam McKay on his site's comedy influence after five years

Five years ago this month the influential comedy website Funny or Die took a few baby steps and uploaded its first video, a rough, hastily assembled sketch that starred, appropriately enough, a baby. Pearl McKay was 2 years old at the time, the daughter of parents deeply rooted in Chicago — her mother, Shira Piven, grew up in Evanston, the sister of actor Jeremy Piven. Pearl's father, Adam McKay, got his start in the Chicago comedy scene in the early '90s, then left in 1995 to become a writer at "Saturday Night Live." The video was called "The Landlord" and featured Pearl screaming at McKay's comedy partner, Will Ferrell. Back then, expectations for Funny or Die, which seemed like just another mingling of originally produced comedy videos and user-uploaded material, fell somewhere in line with scores of other, similar Hollywood-Internet hybrid misfires — remember Dot Comedy (NBC), Pop (Steven Spielberg) and SuperDeluxe (TBS)?

  21. 'The Other Guys'

There is something so richly subversive, so vicariously appealing about turning accountants into action heroes who aim their big guns at Wall Street Ponzi schemers that the idea alone makes the new buddy-cop comedy, "The Other Guys," clever and funny from the first frame.
