5. Cast makes 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' shine ✭✭✭

A comedy-drama saved by the casting bell,"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" arranges for a tiptop collection of British character women and men to bring out the best in a pleasantly predictable story. Wait. Shouldn't that be "unhappily predictable"? Not always, folks: Some projects are better off going easy on the surprises, and concentrating on a reassuring level of actorly craft.

7. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

It’s like The Golden Girls if done by Merchant-Ivory.
Fox 5 San Diego staff
It’s like The Golden Girls if done by Merchant-Ivory. Okay, it’s not that bad. Sure, a lot of the script feels like it’s a TV sitcom, and hey…it was written by a TV writer. The steller British cast includes Tom Wilkinson (who...

** (out of four)
** (out of four) Shame on 2-star movies for the indifference they cause. For the mild successes that quickly fade and for the flaws that could have been avoided with a simple change of procedure. For the fact that bad movies stir up some impassioned...

11. 'Nanny McPhee'

The exotic, antic ground that "Nanny McPhee" treads has been well-traveled by such diverse products as "Beetlejuice," "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (both versions), "James and the Giant Peach," "The Witches" and, most especially, "Mary Poppins." While this adaptation of Christianna Brand's deadpan "Nurse Matilda" series of books may not quite stand at the same level with such impressive predecessors, it's still a spicy little pastry with just the right proportions of flakiness and gooeyness.

13. 'Wah-Wah'

Actor Richard E. Grant makes his feature writing-directing debut with the semiautobiographical drama "Wah-Wah," which is both acidly funny and very moving. Described as a "coming of age at the end of an age" story, the film is set in late-1960s Swaziland on the verge of its independence.

TIMES FILM CRITIC
Wednesday December 30, 1998 It takes two to be sisters, two to have a rivalry, and two exceptional actresses to turn "Hilary and Jackie" into a compelling look at the most intimate and troubling of family dynamics. An assured take on the nature of...

17. 'Calendar Girls'

One of the most popular British imports in recent years is what might be called the tea-cozy movie. Brimming with the most twinkly eccentrics this side of the Shire, with stories of tidy emotional uplift and unsullied locales straight from the national tourist board, the tea-cozy movie means to wrap you in warmth from your nose to your toes. English directors such as Mike Leigh may traffic in hot reality, but over here we often prefer our Brits tepid.
