7. Guy meets 'Girls'

Last Sunday, "Girls," HBO's much-talked-about comedy, debuted its second season. I should qualify that "much-talked-about" description, since "Girls" is really only a major discussion point among young liberal urbanites around the country. It's in matters like "the debate about 'Girls'" that one can speak of latte-sipping liberals and the coastal elite.

Updated Nov. 30, 2012, 12:31pm CT Dec. 21, 2012. There hasn't been so much interest in — and, in some cases, fear over — a date since 1999 and the impending approach of Y2K. Whether or not you believe in the supposed Mayan 2012 prediction that...

  23. Ron White's Moral Compass Tour Comes to Storrs on Oct. 26

Some comedians never make the transition to movie acting, nor do they need to. Between highly rated Comedy Central specials, CD, DVD and book sales and sold-out shows, Ron "Tater Salad" White has remained one of the most successful comedians on the planet for more than a decade. He's brushed shoulders with big-screen success over the years; the 2003 theatrical release of Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie documented his road-dog, cigar-chomping days with fellow Southerners Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy. He's also appeared in the feature films Horrible Bosses and Sex and the City 2, and more recently, the Texas comedian was a featured player in Billy Bob Thornton's 1960s period drama Jayne Mansfield's Car. Still, Tater Salad's best doing stand-up, telling stories while he sips scotch, reminding us again and again how cool and enviable it is to be really, truly funny. Catch his stand-up at UConn's Jorgensen Center on Oct. 26, or be on the lookout for the upcoming television movie Ron White's Comedy Salute to the Troops 2012.
