  1. The 'Argo' factor in this year's Oscar fest

In the week since Oscar nominations were announced, we've sat through two award shows — the Critics' Choice Awards, thrown by a group of junketeers who, according to Anne Hathaway at least, can't even spell the names of their winners right, and...

  3. SAG Awards 2013: 'Argo' a go-go; Day-Lewis an Oscar frontrunner

"Argo" took home a single prize at the 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, but it was the one that mattered most. Winning the trophy for performance by a cast in a motion picture, Ben Affleck's CIA drama solidified its status as the front-runner in an Oscar race that had been muddled for weeks. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" nabbed two of the top acting prizes: Daniel Day-Lewis was named lead actor for his performance as the 16th president, while Tommy Lee Jones was named actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Rep. Thaddeus Stevens. But the film's momentum in the Oscar best picture race has been stalled by its SAG cast loss and by its defeat at the hands of "Argo" at Saturday night's Producers Guild Awards.

  5. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

  7. Anne Hathaway on the luck and pluck that aided her in 'Les Misérables'

Anne Hathaway has had quite a year going into the Academy Awards, at which she's strongly favored to win the supporting actress Oscar for her role as Fantine in director Tom Hooper's "Les Misérables." She got raves for her performance as Catwoman in the summer blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises," sang for President Obama at a fundraiser in August and married actor Adam Shulman in an outdoor ceremony at Big Sur in September. And this month, she's taken home trophies from the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. It's rumored that the film's cast will perform a musical number at the Oscars; at press time, though, Hathaway said she was "still waiting to be told what to do."

  11. On Location: For 'Les Miserables,' fake elephants, real mud and airborne furniture

"Les Misérables" production designer Eve Stewart went straight to the source: Victor Hugo's 1,200-page novel. She didn't just read the book, she channeled it by transcribing key descriptive passages, word for word, onto crib sheets that would inform the...

  13. Review: Vive 'Les Miserables' in all its over-the-top glory

The people who put "Les Misérables" on screen dreamed a mighty dream, they really did. They dreamed of filming one of the most popular of modern theatrical musicals — 60 million tickets sold in 42 countries and 21 languages since its 1980 Paris debut — in a way that had not been done before, enhancing the emotion of what was already a hugely emotional piece. And, despite some built-in obstacles, they succeeded to a surprising extent.
