  3. 'The Newsroom: The Complete First Season'

Much as producer-writer Aaron Sorkin used the White House as a platform to address various issues on "The West Wing," so he does with a fictional cable news network in this superbly acted HBO drama series. Jeff Daniels has what could prove to be his...

  5. The red carpet is a runway for unknown designers

When actresses step onto the Screen Actors Guild red carpet this Sunday, the world will be poring over every flounce, every sequin, every slit, strap, pump and peplum. "Who are you wearing?" has become the ubiquitous question on interviewers' lips....

  7. 'To Rome With Love'

Woody Allen has had considerable success using foreign locales, certainly recently with "Midnight in Paris," and he takes that approach again with this enjoyable comedy that set several stories in Italy. Writer-director Allen himself plays an opera...

  11. Woody Allen's European travels take ensemble 'To Rome With Love' ✭✭

If it's a zinger capped by the phrase "leper colony," if there's a hotel room being broken into by house detectives, if it's Penelope Cruz spilling out of an outfit borrowed from Mira Sorvino in "Mighty Aphrodite," then it's time for the new Woody Allen film.

  13. Sorkin talk fest is no fun

If you ask a smart, talented, prolific, highly opinionated and possibly overextended writer to create a series for you whenever he gets the chance, you might get a terrific television show. Or you might get "The Newsroom," which is what HBO got when it approached Aaron Sorkin with just such a request.

  15. Film review: Woody Allen's 'Rome' is good but can't top 'Paris'

In “To Rome with Love,” his latest feature — roughly No. 42, depending on how you count — the prolific Woody Allen continues his long European vacation. In 2005, he went to London to make “Match Point” and received his best reviews in a decade. (Check out a list of his previous 10 films, and you'll see what I mean.) In 2008, his Spanish outing, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” was even better received; and last year's “Midnight in Paris” still better than that, becoming his highest-grossing film ever and earning him his first Oscar since “Hannah and Her Sisters” in 1986.

  17. HBO’s “The Newsroom” provides enough Sorkinisms but needs more darkness

    Channel Guide Magazine

  19. “The Newsroom” Episode 4 recap: Love, Gun

    Channel Guide Magazine
By Matthew Grimm Kathryn Hahn popped up on Episode 4 of The Newsroom, playing a rambunctious, randy, pistol-packing date of curmudgeonly hero Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels). McAvoy, you’ll recall, is a conservative TV anchorman who, in midlife pique,...
