23. Advocate Interview: Al Jarreau

<span style="font-size: medium;">Vocalist Al Jarreau is a lot of things to a lot of people. Jazz and soul-savvy boomers know his early stuff, when, working by day as a San Francisco rehabilitation counselor in the ‘60s, Jarreau moonlighted as a strict, hep-cat jazzer in a trio with pianist George Duke (of Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa fame) before forging ahead into the world of pop and R&B. Jarreau’s major label debut, We Got By, was released in 1975 when the singer was 41, ancient by pop standards, and Jarreau followed it up with nine albums between 1976 and 1992 that charted in the top 200 in the pop, R&B and jazz charts. It’s this Jarreau that’s familiar to Generation X, introduced to his smooth croon on “We’re In This Love Together,” “Roof Garden” and the theme song to the television show Moonlighting. His status as a yacht-rock hero firmly cemented, Jarreau now finds himself back on radar with the success of “Double Face,” a collaboration with Brazilian producer Eumir Deodato, and he’ll perform on Friday and Saturday nights at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts in Storrs.
