1. Lady A's Strawberry Guitar

A custom guitar, carved into the shape of a strawberry and used by Lady Antebellum on stage is up for auction on eBay. All three members of Lady A autographed the guitar which is now being auctioned for charity. Dave Haywood played the guitar on stage during “Our Kind of Love” at the Florida Strawberry Festival after festival organizers asked them to sign it for the auction. Money raised will go to the Redlands Christian Migrant Association and will help build new classrooms for charter schools in the area.

  3. Savings from Senate pension plan cut by half

    — Senate President John Cullerton's pension reform proposal would slice only about half of what he estimated it would immediately cut from the state's nearly $100 billion retirement system debt, a development that could boost chances for the rival legislation pushed by House Speaker Michael Madigan.

  5. Alonso isn't getting his due

Saturday's "your turn" pieces on education reform ("The fallacy of reform" and "Diversity, choice key for schools," May 18) did not seem to address Baltimore City schools' educational history nor requirements in a practical, yet considerate way.

  11. Former Lake Clifton forward Juwan Newman to Central Connecticut State

When <a href="http://athletics.csi.edu/roster.aspx?rp_id=592">Juwan Newman rode the bench on an undefeated Lake Clifton team that featured three high-major players, he didn’t complain. When the 6-foot-8, 215-pound power forward missed NCAA qualifying standards coming out of high school and prep school, he didn’t stop working to improve his academics. And when the East Baltimore native moved across the country to attend junior colleges in New Mexico and Idaho, he didn’t once think about retreating back home.

  19. School reform doesn't work

In their commentary ("Six steps for post-Alonso school reform," May 14), Thomas Wilcox, Diane Bell-McKoy and Laura Gamble use many lofty and idealistic sounding words to promote their vision. However, it bears noting that education "reformers" are well-versed in using terms that have an appeal, yet bear little substance. It's part of the script to sell the public on a model for education that actually requires a deeper analysis and understanding. Words like "choice" and "accountability" have done for the corporate-model of education reform what buzz words like "whole grain" and "real fruit juice" have done for the food processing industry. Thus, commentaries such as this warrant a translation. My translation as follows is not grounded in empty rhetoric or phrases, but instead relies on facts and examples from other urban areas, to predict what such school, reform may indeed come to look like in Baltimore. The question will then remain: are we willing to buy this model? Or should we read the label more carefully?

  21. Now's the time to raise the bar for Baltimore schools

As the founder of KIPP Baltimore, which operates two high-performing public charter schools in the city, I am heartened and encouraged by our progress over the past six years under schools CEO Andrés Alonso. As I move to a new role as executive director of MarylandCAN — the Maryland Campaign for Achievement Now — I am hopeful that many of the policies and approaches that have driven this progress will be replicated in other Maryland school systems.
