  6. Heavy lifting required for 'The Instructions'

This is a short story about a long story, a story so long it arrived on my desk in pieces, in two Joseph Conrad-size chunks, presumably for easier handling. This was the early galley of "The Instructions," Chicago native Adam Levin's first novel. It's become one of the season's biggest buzz books — despite also being literally one of the season's biggest books. It is nearly 1,100 pages and several pounds; and though its publisher, the Dave Eggers'-founded McSweeney's, has never produced a book so large, Levin's book is getting a generous 12,000-copy first run.
