1. This Week's Picks: 4 Author Events in Fairfield County

Writers may be able to work from home in their underwear, which is a pretty sweet deal, but they've also got to hit the road and promote their books and publications from time to time. This week there are a handful of such events in local libraries and bookstores. Jeffrey Lyons is the son of New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons, and he recounts his dad's life rubbing elbows with 20th century icons like Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra and Ernest Hemingway in his book Stories My Father Told Me. He'll be appearing at the Greenwich Library. Mary Rose Scinto tells the story of the song "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" in her book of the same name, a tune recorded in Bridgeport and now ubiquitous at every sporting event in the country. She's stopping by the Bridgeport Library. Newbury Honor winner Joan Bauer speaks about her new children's novel Almost Home at the Fairfield U Bookstore and former Fine Gardening magazine managing editor Steve Silk talks gardening photography at the Westport Library.

  3. Lesley Stahl Speaks at Fairfield University's Quick Center on Sept. 19

Lesley Stahl was first hired by CBS News in 1972, the very day that affirmative action was passed, and she's seen her industry go through many transitions in the 40 years since. At this Wednesday's Open VISIONS Forum at Fairfield U, she'll recount anecdotes from her two decades of covering the White House during the Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, big stories like Watergate, the Iranian hostage crisis and Iran-Contra, and her experiences as co-editor of "60 Minutes" (a position she still holds). Moderating will be Dr. James Simon, a former AP reporter who created the journalism program at Fairfield University.

  5. 'The Broadway Boys' Playing at The Quick Center in Fairfield This Saturday, 9/8

Landing a Broadway gig is the ultimate goal of many aspiring singers, but Broadway can be limiting in certain ways for a vocalist interested in many genres. The Broadway Boys, which comes to the Quick Center this Saturday night, is a show that encourages male singers from current New York plays to sing the show tunes that pay their bills but also pop, funk, gospel, jazz and folk. The "boys" are put into groups of six, which makes intricate, spot-on harmonies possible — something you'll rarely find in a Broadway show.

  17. Author and Fairfield University Alum David Fitzpatrick Returns to the School's Bookstore to Speak About Psychosis

David Fitzpatrick is a 2011 graduate of Fairfield University's Creative Writing program who's turned lemons into lemonade in a rather grand way by writing a book about his psychosis. In Sharp, Fitzpatrick recalls years of institutionalization (he was compelled to cut himself with razor blades) and the healing process that followed. He'll be at the Fairfield University to discuss his book and to shine a bright light on mental disease, a subject that's often swept under the rug.
