Broward College is a public, state college offering two-year associate degrees, select bachelor's degrees, professional certificates and continuing education classes. The college has three main campuses (Davie, Pembroke Pines and Coconut Creek) and seven centers throughout Broward County with additional locations in development. It serves about 66,000 students a year. The president is J. David Armstrong, Jr., who came to the college in July 2007 after serving as chancellor of the Florida State Community College System. Some Broward College students transfer to a four-year university, while others go directly into the workforce. Broward College admits individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent for its degree programs. Depending on an assessment in math, reading and English, students are placed in appropriate classes. Broward College admitted its first bachelor's students in fall 2008. Broward College opened in 1960 as the Junior College of Broward County and later became known as Broward Community College. In 2012 Broward College was named one of the top 10 community colleges in the country by the Washington D.C.-based Aspen Institute.
