1. BWI flights to Sarasota, Huntsville will disappear

More repercussions of the AirTran Southwest merger. Southwest <a href="http://travel.usatoday.com/flights/post/2012/01/southwest-announces-which-airline-cities-make-the-cut/608722/1" target="_blank">said today it'll end service to six additional AirTran destinations: Allentown, Lexington, Harrisburg, Huntsville, Sarasota and White Plains. That means BWI direct flights to Sarasota and Huntsville will disappear starting in August. I suspected that Sarasota was the more popular destination for Baltimoreans -- snowbirds. But BWI's Web site says there are two daily Huntsville flights and one for Sarasota. Probably a lot of defense-related travel between BWI and Huntsville. But apparently not enough.

  3. AirTran Airways Dropping Service at Harrisburg International Airport

Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) is losing a major carrier. Southwest Airlines is dropping its AirTran Airways service. AirTran Airways offers affordable daily non-stop flights to Orlando, Florida. AirTran will discontinue service from HIA effective August 12, 2012. Since the service began in November 2008, more than 250,000 people have flown between Harrisburg and Orlando. Those numbers officials at HIA say demonstrate that low fare service from Harrisburg will be supported. They hope other airlines will show an interest in serving the route.

  17. Gone since the '80s, airline PEOPLExpress returns

Well, at least the name returns, if not the actual airline. A Virginia-based group is, indeed, starting up a new airline that they are calling PEOPLExpress. Obviously, the new one isn't really a resurrection of the original -- much has changed -- but the new airline will have some similarities. The main carryover is that it will follow the original's low-fare, low-cost business model. Plus, apparently, at least a few of the new line's executive team are alumni of the original line.
