Disney World visitors this week are among the first to hear something new: Space Mountain set to music. An uptempo, futuristic soundtrack has been added to the Magic Kingdom roller coaster. I talked with Alex Wright, a show designer with Walt Disney Imagineering, about the change, which is an extention of adjustments made to Space Mountain in late 2009.

  10. Space Mountain in rehab -- enjoy photos from yesteryear

The Magic Kingdom's in-the-dark coaster soon will go dark for several months. Space Mountain, which debuted at Walt Disney World in 1975, will be closed while undergoing renovations, which the company says will include a new rail (but same layout), new ceiling and new enclosure for the loading area. The final flight from Tomorrowland (for a while) will be Saturday. The company hasn't announced a specific date for re-opening.
