  1. 'The Matador'

    Times Staff Writer
In "The Matador," a delightfully sly diversion, Pierce Brosnan breaks the mold and turns in what might be considered the performance of his career, the kind of witty, relaxed star portrayal that recalls those of Cary Grant and other Golden Era legends....

  3. 'Tsotsi'

When the mugging he masterminds ends in murder, and a member of his gang chooses this delicate moment to make some ill-advised inquiries into his past, Tsotsi (Presley Chweneyagae) beats his buddy senseless and runs out into the rainy night, demons nipping at his heels. He stops to catch his breath in front of a beautiful house, just as its owner is pulling up in a BMW. Tsotsi seizes the moment, and the car, shooting the woman when she tries to climb back in on the passenger side. It's not until he is nearly back to the township that Tsotsi hears the baby gurgling in the back seat.

  5. Tiki tacky? Not to fans of Trader Vic's

It's hardly an architectural icon on the level of the Capitol Records Building or Cinerama Dome, both designed by the same firm. Nor is the place as historically important as, say, the now-demolished Ambassador Hotel.

  7. 'Kinky Boots'

Little movies about the radical self-reinvention of working-class underdogs have become as reliable a British export as Prince Harry damage control. You could say the factory layoff has become the Chekhov's gun of contemporary British cinema — if a plant closes in Act 1, the protagonist must be engaged in some sort of arts-related fabulousness by Act 3. A decadelong diet of this sort of thing and you'd be forgiven for thinking the collapse of industry is the best thing to happen to England since Cadbury Easter Eggs.

  9. 'Proof'

The title of David Auburn's play "Proof" refers to two things: a specific mathematical proof that comes to dominate the plot as well as the human need to offer proof, to demonstrate to others our value, our worth, the truth of our talents and the sincerity of our emotions. In that sense "Proof" is an especially appropriate title for a film that ended up having a lot to prove.

  11. Amputee War Veteran Sues Moore Over 'Fahrenheit'

    Zap2It.com
Michael Moore is still feeling the heat from "Fahrenheit 9/11." A national guardsman seen in the incendiary documentary has sued Moore for $85 million claiming that his footage was used out of context to portray him as anti-war, when in fact he...

  13. 'Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos'

    Times Staff Writer
It's not Zidane-head-butt-to-the-chest invigorating, but the documentary "Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos" does provide an exuberant look at a heady moment in America's soccer past that is well worth remembering....

  15. 'The Queen'

Go ahead, admit it. Between the kerchiefs and the corgis, the sensible clothes and the semi-detached smile, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has never been mistaken for the most dramatic monarch in the world, never given much of a hint that there might be a...

  17. 'The Heart of the Game'

Bill Resler, an exuberant University of Washington tax law professor turned girls' high school basketball coach, would have been a good subject for a documentary all on his own. That a 14-year-old phenom named Darnellia Russell walked into his gym one day is one of those fortuitous twists that makes for a terrific documentary.

  19. 'Renaissance'

    Times Staff Writer
The new motion-capture animated film "Renaissance" is a visually wondrous experience in high-contrast black and white, bogged down by a slow, underwrought story and uninvolving characters. It would be easy to dismiss it as another great-looking film...

December is the month when undiscovered movie gems are found.

December is the month when undiscovered movie gems are found. A band of critics might rise in support, a movie studio may make a last-minute sprint, or a top awards organization could herald an unfamiliar triumph. But what happens when none of that...
