1. The Medicare debate we need

One criticism of the Medicare overhaul that House Budget Committee Chairman Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) has championed is that it would shift more and more of the program's costs onto seniors. In the <a href="http://lat.ms/12N5h23">latest version of his plan, Ryan acknowledges that capping the growth of the program could, in fact, make health insurance more expensive for some retirees. But that's part of the point of the change, which would concentrate Medicare spending on the poorest and sickest seniors.

  3. Don't repeal Obamacare -- yet

<span style="font-size: small;">I've always had mixed feelings about President Obama's health care reform. It offers too many goodies while asking too little of those who will benefit. It assumes expensive prevention services will pay for themselves. It relies on a coercive individual mandate that Obama rejected when he ran for president.

  5. 3 million Californians could receive health insurance subsidies

Some Republicans still cling to the hope that they'll be able to repeal Obamacare someday, but a <a href="http://familiesusa2.org/assets/pdfs/premium-tax-credits/California.pdf">report released Wednesday by Families USA shows why it may be even harder for them to do so after Jan. 1.

  7. Unbalanced budgeting

In case anyone has missed the dueling budget proposals out this week from Rep. Paul Ryan on the Republican side and Sen. Patty Murray for the Democrats, don't fret. You could easily have slept through the last four months and missed nothing. They are pretty much where the two sides have been for even longer than that.

  9. Ryan Budget Makes for Great Unintentional Satire

You know how these popular political shows like “Scandal” and “House of Cards” are always trying to keep the hokey out of their political characters? For instance, my roommate is obsessed with re-watching “The West Wing” on Netflix right now, and it got me thinking, if any of these shows introduced a character as flamboyantly cruel, simple-minded, and ideologically right wing as Paul Ryan, the producers would have to say, “C’mon, let’s not be a bunch of Hollywood liberals making a cartoon character Republican who wants to steal from the poor to give to the rich.”
