11. Film Review: A romantic comedy sans jokes

Road pictures come, off the shelf, with an automatic story arc: the characters must get from point A to point B, not just geographically but thematically. More often than not, they end up at a different point B than they had intended or hoped for. The genre is available in three major flavors: person or persons on the run from pursuers (cops, gangsters, or both); unlikely heroes desperately trying to deliver something (like the rare vaccine for a pandemic); romantic comedy odd couple thrown together by chance, then learning how to get along. Some films manage to do all three at once. The most perfect examples are "The 39 Steps" and "North by Northwest"; "Midnight Run" is close, if you consider "bromance" a subset of "romance."

As you know, Margaret Thatcher died April 8 at the age of 87 after serving as Britain's prime minister from 1979 until 1990. We owe her a debt for at least two reasons, one of them principled, the other cautionary. First and foremost, Thatcher took...

  15. 'Arthur Newman': In the leads, personality to spare; in the plot, a void ★★

A wee movie of comparable interest, "Arthur Newman" is a road-tripping seriocomedy featuring Colin Firth as a depressive identity thief and former pro golfer, opposite Emily Blunt in the role of a suicidal kleptomaniac. Together they find love, while embarking on escapades involving breaking into people's homes and trying on different clothes and personalities.
