  1. Rare Sights At Great Blue Heron Rookery In Portland

    The Hartford Courant
As we came out of the heavily wooded flood plains of Portland's Wangunk Meadows, I could almost hear a voice narrating a nature documentary in the background. "Ah, there it is," the National Geographic-like voice might say. "The Great Blue Heron rookery....

  3. Expect A Workout Visiting The Abe Temkin Preserve

    The Hartford Courant
Within the Middlesex Land Trust's Abe Temkin Preserve is a huge fallen oak. The victim of some summer thunderstorm or winter nor'easter, the fallen giant landed perfectly out into the middle of a swamp. And, of course, the tree is just off the preserve's...

  5. Overlook Rewards Hikers In Lyme's Plimpton Preserve

Standing on top of a huge boulder within Lyme's Elizebeth Plimpton Memorial Preserve, looking over Hamburg Cove out to Long Island Sound, it is easy to imagine a ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. What exactly does a 105-acre preserve in the...

  13. Tariffville Gorge Area In Simsbury Offers A Challenging Hike

The Metacomet Trail winds its way along the banks of the placid Farmington River in the Tariffville section of Simsbury. The cupola of an old mill can be seen in the distance, seemingly standing watch over the river that once powered one of the country's earliest steel and carpet mills.

  15. Valley Railroad Cries Out For Rails-To-Trails Project

    The Hartford Courant
It is kind of sad that there is no trail that really showcases New England's longest waterway — the Connecticut River — as it twists through our state. Sure, there are places like Hartford's Riverside Park or East Hartford's Great River Park,...

  19. Bird Cruise

Intrigue surrounds this evening excursion. "Riverquest" abandons the shores of Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam in search of a "secret spot" where a bird phenomonon occurs every September. We cruise down the gorgeous Connecticut River, passing the historic swing bridge and The Goodspeed Opera House. We spy a few Bald Eagles along the way, but this trip isn't about those majestic creatures. It focuses on a much more common bird with very unusual flight behavior.
