HOW IT GOT ITS NAME: In 1631, the British, to prevent occupation of the area by Dutch settlers, granted a deed to several Englishmen, including Viscount Saye and Lord Brooke. Their combined names were given to the locality in 1636, the oldest English town name in the state. Saybrook was eventually broken up into several towns; Old Saybrook was incorporated on July 8, 1854.
