Those who've managed to keep tabs on the coordinates of my far-flung family know I have a husband in Colorado, a daughter with me in Florida and another daughter in Texas allegedly attending college. It's complicated, and just got more complicated....

7. Lesson of Te'o: Heartbreak is heartbreak

I'm not sure what's more weird, the idea that Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o fell in love with a woman who didn't exist or the soap opera sideshow that has developed around the saga of his fake dead girlfriend.

9. 'Minsk, 2011' finds sexual heat in totalitarian chill

THEATER REVIEW: "Minsk 2011: A Reply to Kathy Acker" by the Belarus Free Theatre at Chicago Shakespeare ★★★★
In these free, privileged United States, the phrase "Sex in the City" conjures up a premium-cable experience of hot nights, cool fashion, heavy appetizers and relationship angst so light it might fly away on the West Village breeze. But whither real sex...

13. Herman Wouk, a novel force

The year Herman Wouk was born, Woodrow Wilson was in his first term in the White House, the Lusitania's sinking was on the front page and "The Birth of a Nation" was playing in silent movie theaters. In the 97 years since, with such books as "The Caine Mutiny," "Marjorie Morningstar and "The Winds of War," Wouk became a force in American letters, and in film and television as well. His latest novel, "The Lawgiver," tells the tale of a Hollywood struggle to make a movie about Moses. Wouk's modern story about the ancient and long-lived biblical hero unfolds via text messages, emails and plain old-fashioned letters. And he's made himself and his late wife, Betty Sarah, characters in the book. Wouk is a devotee of Skype, which is how he talked to me from his Palm Springshome.
