3. America's trade muddle

WASHINGTON -- Americans have a love-hate relationship with foreign trade. In the marketplace, we're enthusiasts. During 2012, we scarfed up $2.3 trillion of imports: cars, computers, clothes, smartphones, shoes, toys, oil and much more. We are also eager exporters, though not as successful, peddling $1.6 trillion last year of jets, tractors, pharmaceuticals and corn, among other things. But in the political arena, we're skeptics. By one typical poll, 63 percent of respondents declared trade "bad" because it "results in the loss of jobs and lower wages." Only 30 percent cheered that it reduces prices and expands choices for consumers.

By Election Day, Americans who have been paying attention will know more about such matters than they did when the race began.

  11. Thinking big about how to renew Sparrows Point manufacturing

Here's what I'm thinking: We get La Famille DeBeaufre to establish a second bakery in Sparrows Point and ship their beloved Berger Cookies all over the world — to China, India, Brazil, Mexico and other nations with rising economies.

  17. Many energy-saving products will cost you instead

Energy is expensive. You can't drive to work without filling up your gas tank. You can't heat your home without oil, propane or electricity. It's only natural to look for ways to shave a few bucks off those costs, but be cautious if you try.
