  3. Break from U.S. carriers lifts passenger spirits

Flying foreign airlines can be so much more pleasant than our domestic options. On a recent KLM flight to Amsterdam, the Dutch airline behaved as if it was in the customer-service industry, not merely transporting a bunch of people from one point to another.

  5. Consultants help turn frequent-flyer awards into tickets -- for a price

Christine Ballentine is a loyal US Airways customer, and she has been saving up her frequent-flyer miles for a trip to France this summer. But turning them into a ticket hasn't been easy.

  7. Senior Travel: 'Airpasses' of limited use

The Skyteam airline alliance just announced a new "Go Africa" airpass, which joins the alliance's existing regional airpasses for Asia, China, Europe and Italy. Skyteam (www.skyteam.com) is anchored in North America by Delta, and includes Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, KLM, Korean, and a few smaller lines. The other two big alliances already offer an Africa pass as well as similar lists of regional and continental passes:

  9. Escaping the cattle car -- but at what cost?

Premium economy air service of some sort -- better than regular economy but not as lush as business class -- is becoming the norm for big airlines around the world. Recent announcements by American Airlines and Cathay Pacific highlight the spreading acceptance of the idea. Although the names may be the same, however, the products certainly are not. Instead, airlines use the term to cover two distinct approaches, with two distinct pricing models:

  11. Where's my ticket refund?

David Ludt's flight to Strasbourg is delayed because of a mechanical problem and then canceled because of weather. Now Air France is refusing his ticket refund request. Is he out of luck?

  13. Senior Travel: Fuel surcharges, the scam that refuses to die

Despite Department of Transportation rules, some travel sellers still feature phony -- and ridiculously low -- airfares with "plus fuel surcharges" in a fine print footnote. As far as I know, airlines have stopped this pernicious practice, but I still see it from some third-party agencies, especially self-styled "discount" agencies and niche-market tour operators.

  15. Senior Travel: Where can I buy discounted business-class tickets?

A reader recently asked about where and how to buy the discounted business-class tickets to Europe or Asia I sometimes mention. Although most of you are clearly interested in finding the cheapest airline ticket available, no matter what, some of you are willing to pay more to escape cattle-car economy -- if it isn't too much more. A handful of agencies sell discounted business-class tickets, and a few of these also now handle premium economy. But don't expect any genuine "fly business class for the price of economy" opportunities. You'll always pay more -- typically at least three to five times as much.

  17. Senior Travel: Bid for cheap upgrades?

A few days before my short flight on US Airways from Charlotte to Baltimore last fall, US Airways sent an email asking if I'd like to upgrade to first class for $90 at the airport, if a seat was still available. I didn't take the US Airways offer -- $90 seemed like a stiff price for a flight of just an hour -- but I might have been tempted on a longer flight. US Airways and a few others are quietly selling upgrades to travelers on cheap tickets, at least on some flights. And, if you have a tough time with cattle-car coach accommodations, buying a last-minute upgrade may be the only practical way to enjoy a comfortable flight.

  19. Improved search systems include European railroads, premium economy

Now that high-speed trains have taken over so much of European short-haul travel, adding rail options to an airfare search system seems like a no-brainer. Ditto allowing for a preference for "premium economy" in a fare search. Surprisingly, only a few...

  23. Probe of Air France crash in Atlantic blames pilots, training

    World Now
The investigation of the 2009 crash of an Air France jet into the Atlantic concludes that the cockpit crew took the wrong steps to correct a high-altitude stall and blamed the errors on poor training of those piloting today's highly automated aircraft....
