    The Swamp
by Peter Wallsten, Peter Nicholas and Richard Simon A day after saying that police "acted stupidly" in arresting a black Harvard University professor in his own home, President Obama appeared to soften his stance Thursday, spreading the blame more...

  5. Newton: Decision time for L.A.

As the campaign for mayor of Los Angeles has played out over the last two years, the complaints I've heard most often are that none of the candidates has reached for big ideas, that the field has lacked big personalities and that the two finalists are hard to distinguish from each other. There's some truth to each of those, but with the campaign concluding Tuesday, it's also worth noting that all of them also are overstated.

  7. Newton: Some questions for Greuel and Garcetti

There was plenty to grouse about in the first round of the Los Angeles mayor's race. Instead of real discussion of the city's issues, the candidates offered evasive cliches. A deluge of debates reduced almost every serious policy position to a sound bite. The crowded field made it hard to focus on those with a realistic chance of success.

  9. Mixed signals on city budget give voters more reason for cynicism

When I <a href=&quot;http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0307-lopez-election-20130306%2C1%2C1638308.column">scolded deadbeat Angelenos</a> for blowing off Tuesday's election, some of them had just enough energy to return fire.
When I scolded deadbeat Angelenos for blowing off Tuesday's election, some of them had just enough energy to return fire. "I chose not to spit into the wind anymore," wrote Lou. "It is not an embarrassment to shun an embarrassment like L.A....

  11. Newton: Decision time in the L.A. mayor's race

The candidates for mayor of Los Angeles have been at it for more than a year, some much longer than that. Together, they have spent nearly $15 million. They've participated in so many debates that they can now address just about any topic &mdash; from pension reform to public safety to the quality of schools &mdash; and they can do it in exactly one minute, with 30 seconds for rebuttal.

  13. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck's side

In the three-plus years since Charlie Beck put on the chief's badge at the LAPD, his goal has been to consolidate a modern, multiethnic, publicly responsible 10,000-officer department, as envisioned in the rattling reforms of 15 and 20 years ago. The chief's recent trial by fire was about one ex-probationary cop named Christopher Dorner and the manhunt that ended in Dorner's death, consumed millions in law enforcement dollars and ate up, for the moment at least, some fraction of the goodwill the LAPD has been working to bank. With investigations launched into Dorner's claims and the LAPD's use of force, Beck sizes up the fallout so far.

  15. Newton: Labor's agendas

This has been a complicated season for organized labor in Los Angeles.
This has been a complicated season for organized labor in Los Angeles. On the one hand, labor got the mayor's race it wanted: Controller Wendy Greuel and Councilman Eric Garcetti both have a long history of supporting, and being supported by, unions....

  17. Dorner and the LAPD legacy

I expected fireworks in South Los Angeles this week, when LAPD Chief Charlie Beck showed up at a community meeting to talk about Christopher Dorner, the ex-cop turned killer whose manifesto cast the department in an ugly light, resurrecting decades of buried wrongs.

  19. Mayor leaves L.A. in better shape than he found it

I couldn't have imagined saying this a few years ago, but I wish Antonio Villaraigosa could run again for mayor of Los Angeles.
I couldn't have imagined saying this a few years ago, but I wish Antonio Villaraigosa could run again for mayor of Los Angeles. You can look at broken promises and judge the mayor a flop: too many potholes, and not enough cops. But I think his...

  21. Responses to Dorner case contain surprises

A Christopher Dorner sighting was reported Sunday in my Northridge neighborhood. Helicopters swarmed, patrol cars roared up. The hardware store was evacuated and my favorite bakery roped off.

  23. Landscaping fiasco at LAPD headquarters not over yet

If the penal code had a section on landscaping crimes, the Los Angeles Police Department would need a full-time squad to go after everyone responsible for the ongoing fiasco on its own property.
