1. Friends Of The Libraries: Government involvement can start here

Election Day is coming up. If you haven't already voted by mail or used other early voting methods, it is important that you inform yourself and vote. President James Madison said in 1822, "A popular government without popular information or the means of...

"Magical." "Unforgettable." "Beautiful." That's how Justin Timberlake, who reportedly once was a pop music star, described to People magazine his wedding to Jessica Biel on Friday at an Italian seaside resort. The bride, 30, and bridegroom, 31, partied...

I don't mean to alarm anyone, but I have uncovered something terrifying. The Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago may be more than just an innocent monument to opulence. I have reason to believe that under the leadership of a former British spy,...

7. Common fallacies about children of same-sex couples

I was a little confused by Marie-Alberte Boursiquot's recent letter ("Catholic doctors for traditional marriage," Oct. 20). The headline over it says traditional marriage, but in her letter she uses the term "authentic marriage." I had never heard that...

13. Film review: 'Butter' spreads it on thick

"Butter" — a frequently funny comedy from director Jim Field Smith ("Episodes") and first-time screenwriter Jason Micallef — is essentially a sports film with a layer of cultural (and, by the end, political) satire. In the tradition of that genre, it pits the sweet, utterly lovable underdog against the smug, utterly loathable alpha dog — only this time, the competition is sculpture; the medium, butter.

17. Fiction tells truths that go beyond mere information

Fiction or nonfiction?
Fiction or nonfiction? That is the question. Is it nobler to fill your mind with so-called informational text or to take arms against the sea of facts and say, "Just tell me a good story, dammit"? Or — to put it without the Shakespearean...

19. Anti-Gun Violence Ad & Spokesperson Show NYC Is Center Of Gun Control Debate

New York City has the toughest gun control laws in the country, but a new ad campaign and the organization behind it show that the effort to curb gun violence nationwide is centered here. Critics of one of the most vocal and powerful groups advocating for stronger gun laws say that its efforts miss the mark for reducing armed violence, even though the group has a very compelling spokesperson.

21. Waging heavy cloudiness

What do you expect from a rock star? I just closed the back cover of Neil Young's “Waging Heavy Peace,” his big anticipated memoir (of sorts), clocking in at 500 pages (75 shy of the rock star-memoir mountain peak established by Keith Richards' “Life”); then I walked around the block; listened to his album “After the Goldrush” on my iPod from beginning to end; checked on the Blu-Ray price of “The Neil Young Archives Vol. 1” on Amazon (still $350); thought about whether I could make an Orange Julius at home; double-checked the date of Neil Young and Crazy Horse's show at the United Center (Oct. 11); admired the library book-spine design of “Waging Heavy Peace”; flipped to a random page and read a random line (“I am fascinated by the power of nature”); stood up, went out, got coffee, returned, sat in front of the book I just finished and tried to remember if I read that correctly — Young once lived in a cabin with a band featuring Rick James on vocal and the cabin was attacked by polar bears?
