3. 'A Joint Venture' At NBMAA

Kay and Tom Cox were interested in art before they were interested in each other. Tom, who had been stationed in Southeast Asia in the military, collected 14th- to 16th-century Thai porcelain. Kay had bought some watercolors of Bermuda, painted on the spot by Alfred Birdseye. "They were only $25 each," Kay Cox said. "I didn't know much about art but I loved Bermuda and I loved what he was doing."

  15. Toulouse-Lautrec & His World at the New Britain Museum of American Art

With just the bare bones of his biography in hand, it would be tempting to characterize the "world" of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), who died of alcoholism and syphilis at age 36, as chaotic. As Toulouse-Lautrec & His World, the touring exhibit that lands in New Britain on Saturday, shows, the dude spent his brief Belle Époque partying in cafés and cabarets, painting his artistic friends. This exhibit culls roughly 150 Toulouse-Lautrec rarities, sketches and posters, including Divan Japonais (pictured). They don't let these items out of Europe very often, so take advantage while they're stateside.

  17. Chasing Moby Dick at the New Britain Museum of American Art

It took a decade for NEW/NOW artist Tony de los Reyes to have his way with Herman Melville's classic Moby Dick (that's about how long it takes most of us to read it). Reyes re-interpreted the book visually, but not in the graphic novel sense; he "reconstructs" the work, using linen, sumi ink and red bister (as with Cannibal, pictured), drawing on a number of stylistic and narrative approaches while creating allegorical parallels between Ahab and America's self-destructive obsessions. The exhibit runs through the beginning of March.

  21. New Britain Museum of American Art Featuring the Works of Artist and Professor of New Media Eric Souther

Eric Souther (pictured), an assistant professor of New Media and Informatics at Indiana University at South Bend, is that rare combination of artist and new-media techno-geek. Souther, who develops his own software, collaborates on multi-media art projects with engineers (notably on a piece called "The Life of the Techno Buddha," when together they developed a "brain wave cap" that controls sound and video), dancers and musicians to create interactive multi-media performances for institutions like Charlotte's Mint Museum of Craft + Design, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City and now the New Britain Museum of American Art, where his "Chair," a compilation of 1,000 YouTube videos, will be on display through March. "Chair" simulates the process of surfing through vast seas of online information, allowing the user to experience databases through a variety of senses.
