5. A Love-Chase playing at the Mark Twain House and Museum

On Thanksgiving night, 1889, Samuel Clemens' three daughters performed a play called A Love-Chase, written by 17-year-old Susy, about what happens when three characters, Music (played by Susy, second from right), Art (Clara Clemens, left), and Literature (friend Margaret "Daisy" Warner, second from left), become enchanted by Julius (friend Fannie Freese, righ), a local shepherd boy. (Jean Clemens, middle, played Cupid.) For Valentine's Day, check out this fun re-creation, which takes place on the same spot where the sisters performed. Seating is limited.

  13. Freetime: Steampunk Bizarre Exhibit at the Mark Twain House

When you think of steampunk — if you ever have — you may envision something along the lines of the novels of Jules Verne: snazzy Victorian suits, monocles and clunky machinery. Apparently, according to the Mark Twain House, the namesake author was also a proponent of this artistic movement. In addition to inspiring works of literature, steampunk has infiltrated fashion, visual art and even the realm of performance art. Starting Oct. 1 all the way through Jan. 15, 2012, the Mark Twain House is presenting the accomplishments of 21 national and international artists who work in the aesthetics of steampunk. Entrance to this event is free with the standard museum admission.

  17. Moore and Me: Michael Moore speaks at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts in Storrs on Nov. 18

The Mark Twain House and Museum brings controversial filmmaker Michael Moore (pictured) to Storrs' Jorgensen Center as part of its A Pen Warmed Up in Hell lecture series, named after an incendiary Twain quote. Moore, whose films Roger and Me, Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko and Capitalism: A Love Story have pretty much taken on anyone with power to abuse, is sure to be both colorful and inciteful. Just like Twain.

The Arab Spring has sprung. It's going to be interesting how all these countries in turmoil today shake out in the end. There's not a lot the U.S. can do about it, either. Ideally, I'd like to see representative democracy take over, but even that could be problematic, especially for Israel. The mainstream thought in the Arab Middle East is against the existence of that small country. Egypt's government was an exception, but what happens next is anybody's guess.
