1. Nafe Katter Theatre in Storrs Tackles Romeo and Juliet

In Connecticut Repertory Theatre's new production of William Shakespeare's classic love story Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio (Andrea Pane, left), Romeo (Will Haden, center) and Benvolio (Ryan Marcone) do what any sensible teenage men of their time would do: duel, talk about stuff endlessly, chase girls and fall in love. Romeo and Juliet get a little love-crazy during a random meeting, even though Juliet's already spoken for. The play is one of the most popular and frequently staged works; CRT's version draws upon both Renaissance and contemporary elements to tell the tale. (Spoiler alert: this one doesn't end so well.)

  5. Petraeus' Shakespearian storyline - Fond fools serve mad jealousy

In William Shakespeare's "Othello," an important general finds himself the victim of a little scheme, concocted by a disgruntled subordinate, to bring him down by making him jealous. It's a tawdry, less-than-credible bit of business involving a handkerchief, and every time you see this play you think, really, that was enough to convince this smart man of the infidelity of his seemingly lovely and ever-supportive wife? That was enough for him to risk his entire military career on a whim of pique?

  23. 'Richard III' plays well on an Ellicott City hill

The title character in "Richard III" qualifies as the most evil villain in any of Shakespeare's plays, which is no small accomplishment. This 15th-century English monarch killed so many members of his immediate family in his ruthless quest to ensure that nobody else sat on his throne that it's difficult to keep the bloody score.
