11. The 'Soledad brother' and his real brother

Listening to 20-year-old Harvard sophomore Rebecca Mazur, in an interview with the BBC, struggle with her emotions last week after learning that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a "lighthearted" boy from her high school AP English class, was "Suspect No. 2" in the Boston Marathon bombing, I remembered the summer day in August 1970 when I got some bad news about a bright and well-mannered boy in my AP English class in Pasadena. Seventeen-year-old Jonathan Jackson had smuggled guns into a Marin County courtroom to stage a holdup in hopes of freeing his older brother George Jackson from Soledad Prison. Jonathan and three others, including the judge, were killed in the resulting melee; George died a year later in prison, shot in the back by a guard.

  13. Old Globe's 2013-14 season to include extra helpings of the Bard

The Old Globe’s new artistic director, Barry Edelstein, is a noted Shakespearean, and its 2013-14 season, the first he’s picked, will give extra emphasis to the Bard, beyond the separate summer series that typically offers at least two Shakespeare plays in the outdoor theater that's part of the Old Globe complex in San Diego's Balboa Park.

  23. Five books: Warming up with a festive high-five

Printers Row Lit Fest announced its lineup earlier this week, and it's led by Judy Blume, the beloved children's book author who has helped several generations endure the agony of adolescence. Blume will receive the Chicago Tribune's Young Adult Literary Prize during the fest, which will be June 8-9. For the next six weeks, this page will be dedicated to Lit Fest authors, offering reading suggestions by some of the nearly 200 authors who will attend. This week we'll start with five headliners. Although with Colum McCann, Elizabeth Berg, Irvine Welsh, Julia Sweeney, Anchee Min, Lauren Weisberger and Blue Balliett on the bill — not to mention dozens of others — it was difficult to pick just five. For more on Lit Fest, including a full list of participants, visit <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/books/printersrowlitfest/">printersrowlitfest.org.
