  1. 'Beowulf & Grendel'

Two elements of "Beowulf & Grendel" make a mixed-up and unbalanced picture nearly worthwhile. One is Iceland. Shooting in various, epically craggy corners of a country that hasn't been location-scouted to death, the film's makers resort to not a single computer-generated effect in this pictorially imposing retelling of the heroic tale. (Scholars date "Beowulf" to somewhere between the seventh and 11th centuries.)

  3. 'Wicked's' Ana Gasteyer plays a mean witch

    Tribune theater critic
There's a new witch in town. Name: Ana Gasteyer. Resume: "Saturday Night Live," "Mean Girls," The Groundlings, Northwestern University. Sings: Pretty well. Acts: Very well. Comic timing: Priceless. In "Wicked," portraying flying green animal-rights...

  5. 'The Devil Wears Prada'

    Zap2It.com
Every third movie or so, Meryl Streep does something swell--and effortless, which isn't one of her defining qualities--to renew her membership in the Great Actress pantheon. "The Devil Wears Prada," a surprisingly sharp adaptation of the Lauren Weisberger...

  7. 'The Departed'

After the dolled-up theatrics of his last few features, from "Casino" (1995) up through "The Aviator" (2004), it's a kick to find director Martin Scorsese back in prime form, at least in the terrific first half of "The Departed."

  9. Capote

    Chicago Tribune
Too many film biographies rely on the mimetic skill and charisma of the actor in charge, as did "Ray" last year, thanks to Jamie Foxx. The Ray Charles biopic was a limited sort of achievement, a case of a fine performer competing against the old A-to-Z,...

  11. 'Click'

Like one of his on-screen tantrums, the Adam Sandler debate seems to go on forever. Is he a one-shtick pony, or a real actor with the long-haul goods? As with many polarized arguments the answer isn't A or B, but C, meaning: "Both," or "Both — maybe."

  13. 'The Night Listener'

It's dangerously easy to lose yourself in the sound of someone's voice. The eyes may be the window to the soul, but the human voice is the cat burglar, prying open the window with a few deceptive purrs. "The Night Listener," an intriguing adaptation of...

  15. 'The Ant Bully'

From the 29 pages of John Nickle's picture book "The Ant Bully," writer-director John A. Davis — who should know better, since he helped create "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" — has puffed up and blanded out a simple story. Lost in the chaos is the story's moral: Being a bully will in time enslave you to your victims, in a good way. We all know that's not usually true, but it's something to tell the kids.

  17. 'Crossover'

A frenzied depiction of the underground basketball scene and the clichés it engenders, "Crossover" comes with more swooshing/zapping/whamming sound effects than a year's worth of "The O'Reilly Factor." Off the court the movie's main characters Tech and Cruise confront the big questions. Take the college scholarship or jump at a streetball career, with hopes — "every black boy's dream," says the ex-sports agent played by Wayne Brady — of going NBA-pro? Trust your gold-digger girlfriend, or not? Deliver hoked-up dialogue with sincerity or storm off the set?

  19. 'Goal! The Dream Begins'

    Tribune staff reporter
"Goal! The Dream Begins" is an inspirational sports movie, but I liked it anyway. Even the hoariest of its screenwriting conventions gets a fair shake from a good cast, including Stephen Dillane (a Tony Award winner for "The Real Thing") and Anna Friel...

  21. 'Death of a President'

Let's go through what "Death of a President" is not. It is not irresponsible. In low tones and with a furrowed "Frontline" brow, it pretends to be a documentary made in the year 2008, about the December 2007 assassination of President George W. Bush...

  23. 'Unaccompanied Minors'

A layover disguised as a film, "Unaccompanied Minors" tells a John Hughes-ian tale of six kids stranded at an airport over the holidays. It comes from a story (a sharp nine-minute number called "Babysitting," by Susan Burton) originally broadcast on the Ira Glass-hosted radio series "This American Life." With that pedigree you think: Promising. Unconventional. Yet the screenplay apparently went through some sort of airport security scanner that sucked out all the quirks.
