1. It's worth stopping along California 99

Call it the accidental road trip. Looking for a less monotonous route home from Northern California last summer, my family and I took California 99 south from Sacramento to Bakersfield and picked up Interstate 5 from there. It took a little longer, but the four-lane road's calming landscape and quirky attractions left us pleasantly surprised and prolonged our vacation buzz.

3. Word power

Earlier this year, when Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a 100-book required reading list for his compatriots, it provoked anxiety, rekindling memories of Soviet-era censorship. The furor underscored an important point: that literature plays a fundamental role in defining a country's culture and its discourse.

5. Genealogy class sprouts tale of Great Migration

When Isabel Wilkerson thought of writing about the Great Migration, the movement of the 6 million black Americans who left the Jim Crow South for the North and West between World War I and the 1970s, one of the first places she headed was Chicago's Newberry Library for a genealogy class. She embarked on this project a decade ago when she was a Pulitzer Prize-winning bureau chief for The New York Times.

11. Bakersfield lives up to the phrase 'hot market'

Special to The Times
You hear it while dining at the Seven Oaks Country Club, then from the mouths of the well-heeled as they ogle showcase homes, and again at nighttime patio parties when the summer heat finally loosens its grip. "It's like you're not in Bakersfield," they'...

15. Thirty years later, Baltimore's aquarium has left a nationwide legacy

Tiger sharks glided swift and smooth, moray eels darted into submerged caves and, in a full-blown rain forest re-created indoors, leafy and humid, tropical birds flitted past tamarin monkeys.

23. Tom Morello keeps punk-rock spirit of Woody Guthrie alive

Tom Morello says he rarely gets nervous anymore before he performs, in part because he’s done just about everything from rocking stadiums with Rage Against the Machine to participating in protest rallies around the world as a guitar-thrashing activist. But he does admit to feeling a little jumpy whenever he plays with Bruce Springsteen, as he did a few weeks ago at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas.
