1. Groundhog Day: Garden's shadow of spring

Deep in a snowless, gray winter, clamped in bitter cold, it's reasonable to ask: What groundhog would be fool enough to think that spring is less than six weeks away? Why are we even thinking about spring on the 2nd of February? Where did this Groundhog Day nonsense come from?

  5. Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow?

At 7:20 a.m. Saturday Punxsutawney Phil will leave his burrow at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa., for the 123rd time and prognosticate how much longer winter will last. If Phil sees his shadow and returns to his burrow it means six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, we can look forward to an early spring. Phil has seen his shadow 99 times, and 16 times he didn't, with 9 years of records missing since 1887. In 2012 he saw his shadow, but in 2011 he didn't. Speaking of animal predictions, the Chimpanzees at the Maryland Zoo predict Ravens to win Super Bowl.

  7. We look forward with hope

It’s hard to believe, but it’s that time of the year again. Ground Hog Day, that amusing event that occurs each year on the second day of February, is almost here.

  9. Destination Cocktail: A creamy classic coquito by Daniel Nelson

The holidays are long over, but your desire to keep throwing parties isn't. Today is Groundhog Day after all, and tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday. Then there's Lincoln's Birthday (which promises to be more popular than ever this year thanks to Steven Spielberg), Mardi Gras and Valentine's Day. And that's just February! Exciting times like these call for batched cocktails that can be prepared a few days in advance. A great recipe to try comes courtesy of Daniel Nelson at Venice's Wolf in Sheep's Clothing. It's his take on a classic coquito, which is really just a creamy tropical version of egg nog that's traditionally served in Puerto Rico. Rum spikes a mixture of rich cream of coconut and evaporated and condensed milk before being sprinkled with belly-warming spices and shot through with a dollop of flavorful vanilla extract.

  11. Nice Weekend

Fog and clouds start out the day west of the Cascades -- but that's not how it's going to be all day. Friday looking quite beautiful in the afternoon with mostly to partly sunny skies across the whole region. Some gorge winds picking up this afternoon and evening. That will keep the fog away east of I-205 at night and tomorrow morning. Groundhog Day looks to be dry and, if you’re near the gorge winds, a shadow for the groundhog and 6 more weeks of winter. But at the Oregon Zoo, where they ask their resident hedgehog (yes, a hedgehog) about when winter will end — I think it will be foggy enough to call for an early spring in the NW.

  17. 2/1/2013-Groundhog Day Tomorrow

I am so completely pessimistic and cynical about this country being able to pass any meaningful gun control laws as long as the right to bear arms is sanctified, enshrined and beatified by the United States Constitution. To end the gun culture we have to do something extraordinary, just as Abraham Lincoln did to end the slave culture in the South. I'm not talking about confiscating people's guns. I'm talking about making gun ownership very tightly controlled, restricted and uncommon. You want punishment for a crime committed with a gun; how about life in prison?
