1. Review: Paintings reveal teacher-students dynamic at Craig Krull

Dan McCleary is one of the finest figure painters working today. Since 2010 he has also directed Art Division, an after school arts program for young adults. Now he is showing with Javier Carrillo and Emmanuel Galvez, talented former students at Art Division. Their recent paintings begin with a stylistic clarity and precision familiar from their teacher's example, while wholly transforming his precedent in distinctive ways.

  11. Go figurative: Pembroke Pines exhibit focuses on the human form

"Still Waiting," a bust by artist Judy Polstra, is covered in buttons, beads and locks, including one at the center of each breast. The head is a clock, reading 7:49. Sharon Dash also depicts the human figure, but in ceramic works. One portrays an orange-haired, blue-eyed woman from the waist up. She wears a blue sweater, and her dark-red lips are parted, perhaps in song. In the palm of her right hand is a bird, which also has orange hair. Its red beak is open and pointed upward, as though it's chirping. Hence the piece's title, "Singing Muse."

  17. On the Town: Souplantation is first up in charity 'Dine Out'

If the Souplantation didn't tickle your taste buds, the "Soup-er Bowl" at Glendale's First Baptist Church was also available this week. On Sunday (Jan. 27), the church opened the first weekend of its annual Missions Festival with plenty of soup ladled out in the church's fellowship room. Association Pastor Matt Andrews gave the blessing on the food. Pastor Charles Updike made sure the soup didn't run out. One of the first in line out of some 120 parishioners present was Glendale resident Helene Capri. She was served by Sabrina Bermudez, 16.

  21. Don't break the rules

To uncover good-looking wood beneath layers of old paint — detailed trim, a carved mantle — there are two choices: chemicals or heat. Both soften paint so you can scrape it away, and both are faster and easier than sanding. But speed has a price, mainly dealing with noxious fumes and caustic solvents.
