1. L.A. Art Show is taking a broad view of art

Invited to provide a table-setter for the L.A. Art Show, a sprawling and mind-bogglingly diverse annual marketplace and smorgasbord for the eyes, Marilyn Lowey delivered an installation that's cheekily site-specific. Titled "Translating Transitions #4," it's possibly the biggest — but most obscure — price tag ever seen.

  5. Miami's cultural transformation

It's Saturday night, and though a drizzle threatens, the lawn is jammed with children snoozing in strollers, couples sprawling on picnic blankets, teens taking a break from skateboarding. The star appears — not some retread boomer rocker but high-octane conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, affiliated with in London and San Francisco, and Miami's New World Symphony, a prestigious youth development academy.

  7. Andy Warhol's 'San Diego Surf' finally coming to the West Coast

Andy Warhol's 1968 movie "San Diego Surf," an unfinished work that had been locked away for more than 40 years, has been making waves in recent months after the Andy Warhol Museum released the 90-minute film for the first time at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2011 and then last year at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

  13. Review: Tom Wolfe's 'Back to Blood'

The masters of the universe in Tom Wolfe's "Back to Blood" don't resemble their counterparts in the writer's other novels. Their voices are louder, their wardrobes are looser, their brows are sweatier and their accents are funnier than the almighty, egocentric people found in "The Bonfire of the Vanities," "A Man in Full" and "The Right Stuff." They leak money like tostones leak grease, they prefer their native tongue over English, their politics are combustible, and when one of their own acts in a way that could be perceived as treasonous, they dole out punishment swiftly and viciously.
