  1. In 'Fractured,' the effects of an oil boom

Some see North Dakota's current oil boom as economic salvation, others as a scar on the land. Now at the Field Museum, an exhibit of photographs by Terry Evans and writing by Elizabeth Farnsworth documents the impact of oil drilling and fracking on the...

  7. Speaking very quietly: Amalia Pica at the MCA

Museums are typically hushed places. Perhaps less today than in the past, but still.
Museums are typically hushed places. Perhaps less today than in the past, but still. And yet it comes as a strange surprise to wander through the galleries of Amalia Pica's solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and find them silent. The...

  9. Monument to a neighborhood's renewal

Walking along Mount Royal Avenue from <a href=&quot;http://findlocal.baltimoresun.com/mount-vernon/home/university/maryland-institute-college-of-art-baltimore-school-educational-facility">Maryland Institute College of Art</a> to the University of Baltimore, what struck me most was the corridor's abject seediness: The buildings had a thick coating of decades-old industrial grime, there were strip bars across the street from the University of Baltimore, mega-sized roaches and a restroom mockup peeked out from the broad windows of the Odorite Building, prostitutes brazenly plied their trade at the corners of Preston and Charles streets. In August 1982, I was a kid from the suburbs starting law school in the city, and this was my first view of student life in Baltimore. The then-new John and Frances Angelos Law School sat squat and brown at the corner of Mount Royal and Maryland avenues, fronted by a sea of mud where the plaza and Edgar Allan Poe statue now sit. It was depressing.

  13. Richard Pryor and Don Draper, soul mates

Somewhere in the middle of Showtime's new documentary about Richard Pryor, it hit me: They're also talking here about Don Draper, the antihero at the center of the TV series &quot;Mad Men," which concludes its sixth season Sunday night.

  15. Voter ID 'conspiracies' are just urban legends

I made an offhand reference the other day to voter ID's solving a nonexistent problem. This set off a reader who responded with a letter. She expressed her disagreement by referring me to an article she had enclosed. I'm going to repeat part of it here,...

  19. The soft sciences matter as much as ever

A <a href=&quot;http:/www.humanitiescommission.org">report</a> released this week bears out what many educators have been predicting: Amid rising college tuition, increased global economic competition and a job market that disproportionately rewards graduates in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields, students are seeking degrees in what they and, indeed, many in our nation view as lucrative business and hard-science disciplines. The study is from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences, on which I serve.
