Notre Dame suffered a major blow to its recruiting class of 2012 when standout wide receiver Deontay Greenberry signed with Houston over the Irish, the school to which he had been committed since May.
"But I was going there for all the wrong reasons," Greenberry told the Fresno Bee on Wednesday, the first day recruits could sign a national letter-of-intent.
Greenberry was expected to join cousin Tee Shepard, who already is enrolled at Notre Dame.
"I was following him," Greenberry told the Bee, "but that wasn't best for me."
Wide receiver was considered one of ND's biggest areas of need in the 2012 recruiting cycle with star Michael Floyd graduated. The Irish did sign two receivers on Wednesday in Justin Ferguson and Chris Brown.
Greenberry visited Houston last weekend.
Irish coach Brian Kelly will meet with the media at 1 p.m. (Eastern).
