SOUTH BEND -- Brian Kelly's favorite mantra, "Next man in," was in full
force Wednesday during National Signing Day.
The words themselves were never uttered, but the message was certainly
implied amidst the deluge of superlatives that the Notre Dame
third-year head football coach ladled on a recruiting class that lost
its new car smell. That thanks to wide receiver Deontay Greenberry
pulling the biggest signing day shocker involving Notre Dame since
C.J. Leak.
Thirteen years after Leak jilted ND for Wake Forest during the Bob
Davie regime, the four-star Greenberry elected Wednesday to join a
gaggle of two- and three-star prospects at the University of Houston.
"I think when you look at what Notre Dame has to offer," Kelly said of
the 6-foot-3, 187-pound wide receiver from Fresno, Calif., "it's
pretty clear when you get ready to sign that letter-of-intent, you
know what Notre Dame provides you.
"And so whether it's Deontay Greenberry or it's somebody else next
year or the year after, we're fine, because they know exactly when
they're getting into when they choose Notre Dame. There may be a kid
that is pretending along the way, that this is really what I want. And
