A driver in a Van Buren County police pursuit early Saturday took a turn into and out of a blueberry field before the driver was arrested.

Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department deputies were operating “Over the Limit, Under Arrest’ drunk driving enforcement effort when they saw a vehicle fail to make a complete stop at an intersection.

That vehicle was moving in excess of 70 miles per hour while on 26th Street near Lawton when police tried to get the driver to stop. Instead, the driver took police on a pursuit with speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour.

In the hope of losing police, the suspect drove into a blueberry field along 26th Avenue and 63rd Avenue. When that failed, the suspect stopped in Antwerp Township, according to a police news release.

Two suspects, a 21-year-old from Galesburg and a 23-year-old from Mattawan, were arrested and face numerous charges. Officers found more than 30 grams of processed marijuana and drug equipment.

Officials will not release suspects’ names until their arraignments.
