Rain chances going up this afternoon and throughout the evening hours. Not everyone will see some rain, places like Lafayette and Kokomo will likely only see some light snow and sleet and that will be it. It won’t be much. Bloomington’s rain chances will begin going up after 3pm. Indianapolis’ rain chances will begin after 6pm tonight.
The rain is due to a surge of moisture coming from our South. This “gulf moisture” means the overall temperature in the atmosphere will warm overnight, even though surface temperatures will be falling. Due to this set-up, as rain begins there will be a decent chance of seeing some sleet mixed in with the rain. As we continue overnight, the chance for sleet will decline. Temperatures will also be falling at the surface so there will also be a small chance for some freezing rain. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few pictures of ice covered vehicles in the morning. Overall, 95% of what falls tonight will be in the form of regular old rain. The 5 percent of “other” (and that’s likely too high) will mostly fall in the way of sleet with a small portion experiencing some light freezing rain.
Rain sticks around through Thursday afternoon with some of the heaviest storms occurring late Thursday morning and early Thursday afternoon. Overall an inch of rain is possible for Bloomington area. A quarter inch of rain likely on the city’s South side. Less than that will be expected on the city’s North side. Finally places like Lafayette and Kokomo will likely see little to no rain. Muncie should only see rain on Thursday and their totals will be minor.
