St. Joseph County police say a 50-year-old Elkhart woman, now identified as Cynthia Cataldo, died from blunt force injuries after she was hit by a car in front of Mr. G’s Bar in Osceola.

Cataldo taught at Trinity Lutheran School. The flag outside the school at Ash and Cleveland roads is at half mast.

The accident happened just after 11:30 Saturday night. Police say witnesses at the scene told them Cataldo was walking across the street toward the bar there in the 700 block of Lincolnway West when she suddenly changed direction like she meant to go back the way she had come.

That’s when she was hit by a 4-door sedan driven by 30-year-old Lesley Craft, who is here from South Carolina visiting relatives, say police. Cataldo was taken to Memorial Hospital with severe head and internal injuries and eventually passed away.

Police say neither alcohol nor speed were factors on the part of Craft. She was uninjured and was not arrested or cited at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
