People pulled over, got out of their cars with their cameras to see it up close.
Joe Livings said he did it so he could show it to friends. "And get their reactions," he said.
People took pictures of the billboard depicting armed military men with the caption 'the Navy Seals removed one threat to America. The voters must remove the other.'
Don Nunemaker said his group, “We the People of Marshall and Fulton counties” is responsible for the billboard. The goal was simple … get their message out.
Nunemaker said his group has three billboards … one on U.S. 30 near Plymouth, one on U.S. 31 south of Argos and the billboard in Elkhart.
He said the Elkhart intersection has a lot traffic and plenty of opportunities to get people talking.
Does it go too far?
"They are considering President Obama a threat, yeah, it went too far, yeah," said Pam Cupery, who saw the billboard.
Controversial? Yes, but Nunemaker said, "that's a good thing."
But, Elkhart County's Republican Party Chairman Dale Stickel, said, "I am very unhappy with the ad, some may find it humorous, I do not. It can be read very negatively and at best it is in very bad taste. It is counterproductive to the goals of the people who placed it and further lower the bar on an already negative campaign."
Dwight Fish from the Elkhart County Democratic Party said, "It's sad the group has to resort to this. It's appalling and a shame."
As for the billboard … there are no plans to take it down. Nunemaker said the billboards will remain until Nov. 1.
