SOUTH BEND – Just days after a car crash at the New Paris Speedway sent 6 people to the hospital, an accident of a different sort took place at the South Bend Motor Speedway.
Firefighters and medics from Warren Township were called into action minutes before midnight July 4 after molten metal went flying in the grandstand from a jet engine that was apparently being used to burn a junk car.
A 10-year-old boy reportedly taken to the hospital with burn injuries, and several others suffered less serious injuries. There's no word on the boy's condition.
John Straw tells us some of the metal hit him and his son.
“I saw the hot metal coming and I grabbed my son and turned my back to the track,” he said. “It hit me in my back. It hit my son in the head. There were two or three grown adults at the top of the track and it hit them.”
The South Bend Motor Speedway did not return our calls.
