SOUTH BEND -- Some high school students will soon have a busier schedule.
The school board just voted to give them another period of classes.
Starting next year, students who attend Adams, Clay, New Tech, or Riley high schools will have a seven-period day, instead of the current six.
The length of the school day will remain the same, but supporters say the additional class will mean more options for students who have had to pass up classes they wanted or needed to take.
It’ll also create a busier day for teachers, who now have to plan for an extra period of work.
“Our current schedule works exceptionally well for the overwhelming majority of our students, regardless of their academic level,” said a teacher opposed to the change, who spoke Tuesday night during the school board meeting.
“We have come to a consensus that if it's good for the kids, it's good for everybody,” said Mansour Eid, principal of Clay High School, who supports the seven-period day.
It's unclear what effect the tighter schedule will have on student performance. Results have varied in other districts.
The school district insists the additional period is not to save money, though they do plan to trim about eight teaching jobs from the district as a result of the change.
